Fox Pulling ‘Utopia’ Off Tuesday As ‘MasterChef Junior’ Takes Slot in November

Looks like Utopia isn't doing that well for Fox...

Fox is pulling struggling new reality show “Utopia” — which had been airing twice a week — off its Tuesday schedule, and will replace it in November with “MasterChef Junior.”

Last night’s airing of “Utopia” averaged a 0.8 rating/3 share in adults 18-49 and about 2 million viewers, according to Nielsen — its fourth straight weak performance in the high-profile Tuesday 8 p.m. hour, which leads into comedies “New Girl” and “The Mindy Project.” The “social experiment” series will continue to air on Fridays at 8.

This is a timeslot upgrade for “MasterChef Junior,” which was a solid performer in its first edition on Fridays last fall — averaging a 2.1/8 in 18-49 and 5.6 million total viewers in “live plus-7″ averages. It had been scheduled to debut on Friday, Nov. 7, but will now kick off its second season on Tuesday, Nov. 4.

Prior to the debut of “MasterChef Junior,” Fox will plug its Tuesday 8 p.m. hole with encores of the one-hour season premiere of “Family Guy” (the crossover episode with “The Simpsons”) on Oct. 7, and then encores of the season premieres of “The Simpsons” and “Bob’s Burgers” on Oct. 14. The World Series is scheduled to air on Fox the last two Tuesdays of the month.

Fox had originally planned for “Utopia” to air for six weeks on both Tuesday and Friday, before moving to a Tuesday-only schedule. So, the sked change means that its lone night will now be on the lighter-watched Friday.

Uh oh. That's not a good sign. They invested a whole 365 days to that show. It is actually quite entertaining but I think people are finally realizing that it could just be the same old without any added competitions or change in the everyday life.

What sucks for Fox is they were supposed to actually drop the Friday telecast 6 weeks in and just keep it on Tuesdays.

Which is why I think they're trying new things like eliminating someone and replacing them with another person. It's a great concept of a show, but I don't know if it's enough to keep it going by itself. It seems like it needs something to attract more attention to it.

I loved The Colony when it was on, but that was only weekly and for a limited run, so the unending storyline of this show may be the reason people aren't drawn to it. If they feel they can tune in at any time to watch people live their lives and build a new society, why tune in this week? There's always next week...

This is definitely not a good sign for the show. Established shows like Shark Tank can handle Fridays, but to relegate Utopia to Fridays only seems like they're just going to let it slowly die out.

they should move it to Sunday night

I'd never heard of The Colony.

And yea, makes sense why they are adding new features to the show.

Sassy, they won't move it to Sunday. Sunday is a big night for TV and this show isn't established enough to last on Sunday.

The Colony had 2 seasons on the Discovery Channel, but it was more of a semi-scripted show where they put a mix of people together with nearly nothing and asked them to create a place to live, with power, running water, etc, until they could escape their surroundings to find help (a la surviving a natural disaster.) It was entertaining, but definitely more scripted than Utopia is.

I'm still watching Utopia.
